Memphis, Tennessee, my mother and father’s family still live there, was founded on the Mississippi River in 1819 with only a few hundred people. By the 1840s, it had become an important center for cotton, which was brought from surrounding farms and shipped through Memphis to New Orleans and even Liverpool, England.
During the American Civil War, Union forces captured Memphis in 1862 and held the city for the rest of the war. Memphis later became famous for music. Beale Street was an important center of the blues, and musicians such as B.B. King performed there. Elvis Presley also made Memphis famous through his home, Graceland, which Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited in 2006.
Memphis also played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. came in 1968 to support striking sanitation workers. After giving his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech, he was assassinated the next day.

With me experiencing the hardship of essentially becoming an orphan, I went to live with my grandmother for some years, with my aunt for two years and with my godparents for one year in different neighborhoods throughout the city. Academics was the one constant in my life. It was my only chance.
Today Memphis is a majority-Black city famous for blues, rock and roll, barbecue, and the annual Memphis in May festival where they judge the best pork rib, shoulder, and whole hog barbecue recipes. Amazingly, Japan was the festival’s honored country in both 1977 and 1986.
